After spending about 1,5 years in Southeast Asia, and then relocating to Sofia, Bulgaria, we’ve had a lot of time to compare the two. This article is about sharing when and why one destination might suit you better than the other.

As I’m writing this, I’m in Bangkok, Thailand. It’s Saturday, and I sent my husband René out to meet with his friend so I could finally record a video without hearing him talk on Zoom all day. That’s what inspired the topic: remote work in Asia versus Eastern Europe.

SE Asia vs. Eastern Europe (Bulgaria) — Which Makes More Sense for Remote Workers and Expats in 2026?

Cost of Living — Southeast Asia vs. Eastern Europe

If you’re here, you’re probably also doing lots of research on cost of living. Prices are going up all over the world, and a lot of us are trying to find a better setup that fits our budget and lifestyle.

My YouTube Subscribers range from digital nomads in their 20s to retirees in their 60s. And while everyone’s situation is different, I want to focus this comparison on people like me and René (my husband) — those who are:

  • Working remotely
  • Looking to build a future
  • Wanting a stable home base
  • Interested in tax optimization
  • Needing a home office and reliable internet

If that sounds like you, this article will be especially relevant.

Cost of Living for Expats in Bulgaria

When Southeast Asia Still Makes Sense

If you’re just starting out as a digital nomad or you’re already retired with no work obligations, Southeast Asia might still be perfect. I’ve made videos about living in Da Nang, Vietnam, and I think it’s a great destination right now. We spent over a year there and had a wonderful experience.

You can enjoy the weather, culture, affordable prices, and maybe even take care of your health by staying active and eating fresh food. But if you’re working online, you might start noticing the downsides that pile up over time: humidity, mold, power cuts, and the kind of air pollution that forces you to stay indoors for days, and a lifestyle that doesn’t always support productivity.

Why We Left Southeast Asia for Bulgaria

We both work full-time remotely. We wanted:

  • A stable, legal home base
  • A place where we can set up a real home office of a reasonable price
  • Clear tax residency
  • Less transient energy than typical nomad hubs

In Bulgaria, we could do all that. We also didn’t want to constantly look for new rentals or bounce between short-term visas. At some point, the novelty of constant travel wears off, and you start looking for long-term stability.

We also realized that our needs had changed. While Southeast Asia is great for a more flexible or short-term lifestyle, it started to feel less aligned with our long-term goals. Our friends were in different time zones, we worked evenings instead of days, and felt a bit disconnected from the rhythm of our lives back in Europe.

Best City in Bulgaria for Remote Workers or Retirement

The Real Cost of Living — and Why Portugal Didn’t Work

Yes, Asia is often cheaper — but not always. When you live in places like Thailand or Vietnam long-term, you might be surprised at how quickly the small expenses add up. Eating out daily, Western groceries, frequent Grab rides—all of it adds up fast. And unless you’re living exactly like a local, the cost gap with Eastern Europe isn’t as big as you think.

In Bulgaria, we found the balance we were missing: affordable rent, stable internet, functional heating and cooling, and the ability to build a life that feels professional and peaceful. For the same price or less than we paid in Bangkok, we got a bright apartment with proper heating, space for a home office, fast internet, and peace and quiet. No humidity, no mold, no fear of power cuts, no crossing your fingers when turning on the hot water.

We actually tried Portugal before Bulgaria—and while it looked great on paper, we ended up overpaying for a noisy apartment in Lisbon that didn’t feel safe or comfortable. That experience made us realize how important local knowledge is, and how tricky the rental market can be in Western Europe. Bulgaria gave us much more value for money and peace of mind.

14 Reasons to Move to Sofia, Bulgaria from Western Europe in 2026

Apartments — What You Actually Get in Bangkok and Sofia

In Bangkok, you can find a tiny condo on the outskirts for €300–400. There will be just enough space for a bed, a tiny table and couch, and a small kitchenette. The same setup in the city center will cost around €800–1000.

In Bulgaria, you can rent a larger, modern one-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen near the city center for €400–500, or a two-bedroom for €700–900. If you’re flexible with location or furnishings, the price can drop by 50%. In Bangkok, I would budget €2000 for a similar setup.

So, living in Bulgaria on the budget of a central studio in Bangkok, we get a spacious two-bedroom with a full kitchen—and finally have a proper home office that isn’t squeezed into our living room or bedroom.

In Sofia, for the same price or less, we got a bright apartment with proper heating, space for a home office, and peace and quiet. It felt like we could finally breathe again—and focus.

Living in Bulgaria Pros & Cons: 1 Year Review

Residency — Legal Status and Long-Term Stability

Then there’s residency and taxes. In Thailand, there is a digital nomad visa option now (DTV), but it’s still relatively new and not available to everyone. In Vietnam, you’re still on a 3-month visa and need to leave the country to renew. In Bulgaria, for EU citizens and their partners, there is an option to register for legal 5-year residency in just a few steps—and that comes with clear tax status, EU protections, and a sense of belonging you can’t get in Asia.

For non-EU citizens and retirees there are option to get 1-year residency that you can extend every year.

Safety — Feeling at Home and Protected

What about personal safety?

Both in Thailand/Vietnam and in Sofia, Bulgaria, I felt safe. I wouldn’t wander alone at night in an unfamiliar area, but I’m also not afraid of violent crime or someone chasing me down the street.

What about natural disasters? Southeast Asia is a region where typhoons and flooding happen, as well as earthquakes—like the recent one in Myanmar that was felt in Bangkok. And although these events don’t happen often, it’s still something to consider if you’re planning to stay long-term.

Final Thoughts — So, Asia or Bulgaria?

If you’re young, just starting out, or want to test the waters for a few months—Southeast Asia can be amazing.

But if you’re ready for more stability, want to optimize your taxes legally, need a reliable setup for remote work, and still want to live affordably in Europe—Bulgaria makes a lot of sense.

If you’re coming from the digital nomad world, it might take a mindset shift. Eastern Europe (and Bulgaria in particular) gives you:

  • Legal residency (especially easy for EU citizens)
  • Low flat taxes (10% income tax)
  • Reliable infrastructure
  • A growing remote work community
  • Seasons, fresh air, and nature (not just constant heat or humidity)

It’s not as trendy or hyped, but that’s kind of the point. We’re not here to chase the next hotspot—we’re here to build something real and sustainable.

If you’re thinking of making a base in Europe, and want something outside of the typical options like Portugal or Spain, I highly recommend giving Bulgaria a closer look. That’s why we’re here.

8. Plane spotting on Phuket Thailand

Are you tired of just sitting on the beach and sipping on piña coladas? Why not spice up your beach vacation by going plane spotting on Phuket, Thailand? Yes, you read that right. Plane spotting has become a top-rated attraction in recent years, and for good reason!

The best place to do this in Phuket, Thailand is at Mai Khao Beach, where you can watch planes land with the beautiful ocean as a backdrop. But before you pack your bags and head to the beach, there are a few things you should know.

First, there is a season for plane spotting in Phuket, Thailand and it has nothing to do with birds or bees. It’s all about the monsoon winds. During high season, which is from December to June, planes land over the ocean. But during low season, the wind changes direction, and planes approach from the roadside and take off over the beach. Not as impressive, if you ask me.

The best time to go is at the end of the morning when the light hits the sea and makes it look incredibly blue. And if you want to be really prepared, download the FlightRadar 24 app to know when and which plane is landing next. Talk about being an aviation expert!

HI SO Rooftop Bar in Bangkok

HI-SO is the trendsetting rooftop in Bangkok. We went there for a little celebration (see video below) and it did not disappoint!

Located on the 29th floor, HI-SO offers an enchanting ambiance with a view overlooking Lumpini Park. There was no dress code, but overall I would say don’t wear beach clothes 🙂 I would say that prices are above average for Bangkok, but that’s expected in a fancy rooftop bar.

HI-SO opens its doors daily at 5.00 PM and welcomes guests until midnight.

Address: is conveniently located at 2 North Sathorn Road, Bangrak, Bangkok 10500. You can easily get there by taxi or public transport (MRT station is very close).

Octave rooftop bar in Bangkok, Thailand

Went out to an Octave rooftop bar in Bangkok, Thailand with a friend. I was living in Thong Lo and Octave Rooftop bar was 2 minutes from my condo.

Octave rooftop bar is on 50th floor of Marriott next to Thong Lo Skytrain BTS station. Panoramic view of Bangkok, the DJ plays chill dance/electroniс music.

We went to Octave rooftop bar in Bangkok for happy hour 5-7 pm, selected cocktails 50% discount. Normal price 410 THB. We tried 4 different drinks, cocktails were not great, but nice chill atmosphere and an amazing view is definitely worth it!

Octave rooftop bar in Bangkok Thailand

The dress code at Octave rooftop bar in Bangkok is not too strict. Men in shorts were allowed, alsoo wearing T-shirts. But no open toe shoes (no trainers).

Overall seemed like a lot of tourists, dressed not too fancy. My review is Octave rooftop bar is one of the best, not too expensive and not too strict with dress code skybars in Bangkok. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you stay not far from Marriott hotel (Tong Lo BTS).

Mahanakhon Skywalk and Bar in Bangkok, Thailand

Mahanakhon Skywalk and bar in Bangkok, Thailand is the highest observation deck (314 meters) with a glass floor, that has 360 degree panoramic views and a rooftop bar with live music. A must see in Bangkok.

This is more of a popular tourist attraction, than a sky bar. Be prepared that there will be many other tourists, taking pictures and enjoying the views.

Spectrum Hyatt Regency Rooftop Bar in Bangkok, Thailand

Spectrum Hyatt Regency is a rooftop bar in Bangkok, Thailand, Sukhumvit area. You will find it on the 30th floor of Hyatt Regency hotel, near Nana BTS station (famous party area). Trendy music, international atmosphere, and the restaurant on the 29th floor.

The dress code is quite strict. Dress elegant/business, no shorts and flip-flops. But the staff will offer men and women appropriate shoes if needed.

In conclusion, Bangkok’s rooftop bars are a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the city’s nightlife scene. Octave rooftop bar in Bangkok, Spectrum Hyatt Regency, and Mahanakhon Skywalk and bar are some of the best spots to enjoy a drink with a view.

Octave’s three levels offer a unique experience, while Spectrum’s fusion cuisine and live jazz music create a sophisticated ambiance. And let’s not forget about Mahanakhon, where you can take a ride on the glass skywalk and feel like you’re on top of the world.

When it comes to finding an apartment in Thailand, it’s important to consider the type of accommodation you’re looking for and the location you’ll be staying in. Depending on your preferences, you may find that certain cities offer more options than others.

In cities like Chang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya, it is relatively easy to find an apartment by walking around. However, in Bangkok, most landlords require a one-year contract, making it difficult to find short-term rentals. If you’re looking for a short-term stay in Bangkok, the easiest way to find an apartment or condo is to use Airbnb and rent directly from the owner.

However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. If you’re looking for a short-term rental in Bangkok, you may be able to find one in small-rise apartments around On Nut Skytrain station. These apartments often offer 1-3 month contracts, which can be perfect for travelers who need a place to stay for a few weeks.

Another factor to consider when looking for an apartment in Bangkok is the type of condo you want to stay in. High-rise condos are more likely to have a pool, gym, and security, while smaller condos may not have as many facilities. Depending on your budget and preferences, this may be an important factor to consider when choosing an apartment.

My apartment in Thong Lo BTS Bangkok, Thailand

When I was in Bangkok, I found a great condo on Airbnb that was located just a 3-minute walk from Thong Lo BTS. The area was perfect for me, as it was near the hipster party area, Terminal 21 (one of the biggest shopping malls in Bangkok), and Nana (the party area for male tourists).

The condo itself was low-rise (7 floors), had a pool, gym, and 24-hour security. The 1-bedroom unit was very quiet, had blackout curtains, and a western-style soft mattress (Asian mattresses are often rock hard).

A luxury shopping mall, Emporium, was just a 10-minute walk away, making it easy for me to do some shopping or grab a bite to eat.

As for nightlife Tong Lo was also a great are to stay. Right next to the BTS station in Marriott hotel there is a Rooftop Bar with unforgettable views and happy hour deals. Highly recommended!

I also spent 2 weeks at Ideo Mobi Eastgate in Bangkok, which was a typical big condo. I chose this condo because it was close to BTS and I wanted to avoid Bangkok traffic. It was just a 2-3 minute walk from the BTS, and being away from the city center (about 10 stations) did not bother me because I had been to Bangkok before.

Ideo Mobi Eastgate is a high-rise condo with a swimming pool, gym, and recreational area. The downside of the apartment itself was the lack of a washing machine, but there were machines available in the common area.

When it comes to the location of your apartment in Bangkok, there are a few factors to consider.

One of the most popular areas to stay in Bangkok is Sukhumvit. This vibrant area is known for its high-end shopping malls, bustling nightlife, and excellent restaurants. If you’re looking to bump into young trendy people (locals and foreigners), you’ll likely find them in the stylish Thonglor neighborhood. With its trendy bars, cafes, and boutique shops, it’s no surprise that Thonglor is a hot spot for French visitors.

Another area popular with tourists is Silom, known for its vibrant street markets, lively nightlife, and easy access to many of the city’s iconic landmarks.
