Just recently I did a 2-day solo trip to Hue and can’t believe I was putting it off for so long! Great hotels in the heart of the city, local restaurants with yummy food and sooo many things to see!
I was under impression Hue is basically a “historical” city, where all you can do is go visit gray tombs and old (also gray) palaces all looking the same.

But I was so wrong! Hue turned out so pretty and colorful, with a long stretch of a river promenade that is so well done and well maintained. Cosy restaurants with delicious food, beautiful nature and a never-ending Imperial city that is both colorful and not crowded at all! Hue is like a much less crowded version of Hoi An.

How to get to Hue, Vietnam
You can get to Hue by bus or train.
Hue Railway Station provides a rail connection to major Vietnamese cities, via the North-South Railway. Tickets are very affordable.
On the train you will even have USB sockets to charge your phone. I highly recommend taking a train, especially Da Nang – Hue ride going via Hai Van pass (about 2,5 hrs), it is often called one of the most scenic train rides in Vietnam.
The best way to get a ticket is to buy it online ahead of the trip. On the day of the trip at the station there might not be seats available.
However, I did hear a lot of stories about train travel in Vietnam. Noise, smells, cockroaches. But none I saw on my ride from Da Nang to Hue and back. I think a lot has to do with that it was a short ride during the day time.

How to book a train ride to Hue, Vietnam
- Go to the website ( click the link)
- Choose your departure and destination location, preferred dates
- Choose how you want to travel. I recommend going for VIETNAM RAILWAYS, “Soft seat”. If you will be traveling overnight, you might choose “Sleeper”. But for a short day trip a “Soft seat” is definitely a good choice.
- • After you are finished with booking and payment, you will receive an electronic ticket with instructions. No need to print it, just have it on your phone at the station.
From the railway station in Hue it’s just a short taxi ride to the city centre. Book it when you arrive via Grab taxi app.
On the website you can also book bus & plain tickets all over SE Asia.

Da Nang is just 2,5 hour train ride from Hue and is a must see in Vietnam. White sand beaches, great infrastructure, lots of attractions to see (Ba Na Hills is not to miss!).
You can spend 2-3 days or a whole week in Da Nang.
There you will also find big Digital Nomads and Retired expats communities. One of the most affordable cities to live long-term as a foreigner without sacrificing the quality of life.
